Hamish Chapman

Hamish Chapman’s highly-considered compositions centre around the significance of particular sites of gender expression. By including common indicators, Chapman questions the socially-driven impulse to assign gender. Imagery taken from tennis is a central component of Chapman’s recent work. Tennis encourages both physical force and creativity within very strictly-controlled boundaries, the minutest transgression of which means failure. Chapman reflects on the parallel arbitrariness of the boundaries of gender-expression and the consequences of transgression. 

Hamish Chapman was born in 1993 in London. They graduated from the department of Painting and Printmaking at the Glasgow School of Art in 2015. Recent solo exhibitions include robert’s, Glasgow (2022) and Quench Gallery, Margate (2022). Chapman lives and works in London.
