Eileen Cooper Illustrates Angela Carter’s ‘Nights at the Circus’

The Folio Society has released a new edition of Angela Carter’s 1984 novel Nights at the Circus, complete with illustrations by Eileen Cooper. Winner of the 1984 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for fiction, Nights at the Circus is regarded as a classic of British literature, spinning an intricate tale of romance, magic, and lies.

Seeing the similarities between her own work and Carter’s strong female characters and magic realist influences, Cooper felt that the wealth and depth of her illustrations would compliment Night at the Circus’ themes aptly. Working in France during the summer of 2019, Cooper embarked on a labour intensive ‘print-based collage’ method, which included hand drawing, lino cutting, printing, and assembling her pieces. As the collages took shape, Cooper would occasionally add extra watercolour and drawing. Cooper’s nine vibrant lino-cut collages and monoprint title page capture Carter’s influential vision perfectly.
