Martin Parr’s seminal series ‘The Last Resort’, taken from 1983-1985, will be revisited in Merseyside this month as part of the Independents Biennial 2018. A group show will bring together for the first time the New Brighton pictures of internationally renowned British photographers Martin Parr, Ken Grant and Tom Wood. Showing in the town from which the pictures stemmed, this exhibition records three decades of New Brighton through the eyes of the three photographers as they lived and worked in the town.
The exhibition is hosted by Northern Narratives, an arts initiative offering opportunities to experience photography set up by Ken Grant and Tracy Marshall, in association with Open Eye Gallery, where Wood and Parr exhibited together in 1986. Although the trio of artists never shot together, their careers continued to intertwine with Grant studying under Parr at Farnham College, and Grant and Wood often showing each other their work. All three lived in or around New Brighton for periods between 1978 and 2003.
The exhibition is supported by Arts Council England and Wirral Council, and runs from 14 July – Saturday 25 August 2018 at The Sailing School, Marine Point, New Brighton.
