Silver gelatin print, printed 1987
13 1/2 x 20 inches

In the mid 80s when plans were being formulated to start the life gallery of photography this image was selected from a group of contact sheets while the founding director and eisenstaedt looked through his essay on paris. this present print is likely a test print made in 1987 for the limited edition they released in 1989. a print of this image was included in the 2nd life gallery show (december 2, 1986 – january 23, 1987) which coincided with the icp exhibit, “eisie at 88”, november 13, 1986 – january 11, 1987. only a small number of prints were made prior to the issuance of the limited edition. prior to its rediscovery by the gallery, it may have been printed only a few times – first, for the 1963 life international article, and possibly for an exhibition in the time & life building in 1966 when eisenstaedt’s book, witness to our time was released — however, it did not appear in that book — and possibly for a retrospective at the national theatre in london in february of 1986.
