Biography
Olafur Eliasson’s artistic practice spans installation, photography, painting, film and sculpture. Working with a network of researchers, fabricators and collaborators, Eliasson explores the interrelation of art and science. In particular, he seeks to create an awareness for how we engage with the world to build an understanding of natural phenomena. Frequently using elemental materials in his installation and sculptural works, Eliasson sees his work as an experience to be explored and realised through an active view, rather than just as a static object. Using these varied media, the artist examines how cognitive and cultural conditions shape and impact our perception.
Born in 1967, Eliasson graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Art in 1995. As well as numerous public commissions, Eliasson’s work has been the subject of extensive exhibitions, including a celebrated installation at Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall and the Venice Biennale in 2003. His work has been presented at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris, Moderna Museet, Stockholm, the Samsung Museum of Art, Seoul, the Guggenheim Bilbao and Kunsthaus, Zurich. Eliasson’s work is held in several public institutions including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Solomon R Guggenheim Collection and Colección Jumex, Mexico City.
Eliasson lives and works in Copenhagen and Berlin.
