Biography
Painting as a form of devotion to his emotions and reflections, Damien H. Ding explores connections between otherwise estranged ideas and concepts. He illuminates the gaps – the cognitive, experiential, and temporal – weaving together ancient techniques like egg tempera and industrial aluminium panel, soft flowing forms in architectural wooden frames, and mask-like faces that reflect one’s true form. Ding’s paintings capture the emotional experience of encounters with the irrational and the impossible as he creates an intimate proximity between that which is disparate.
Damien H. Ding, born 1992 received his BA in Art History, with a minor in Asian Studies, from Swarthmore College in 2018 and his MFA in Painting and Printmaking from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in 2021. Ding was awarded the Editors Selections Prize in the New American Paintings MFA Annual Competition in 2021. His work has been exhibited in Paris, Boston, New York, Hong Kong, Vancouver, and Richmond. He lives and works across New York City and Singapore.
