Biography
Juxtaposing the everyday against the unfamiliar, Tommy Harrison’s paintings capture the unreal and the uncanny possibilities of the quotidian. Influenced by art history, Harrison pulls from subjects, techniques, and themes from the High Renaissance to the present day. In constructing common spaces that operate in opposition to their real life functions, he abstracts their purpose, inviting a sense of the surreal. Repeatedly drafting and reconstructing his paintings, referencing back to his past mark making and the work of those before him, Harrison’s intricate paintings explore the multitude of possibilities for painting, both the artform as a whole and within each piece.
Tommy Harrison (b. 1996) received his BA in 2021 and MFA in Painting in 2023 from the Manchester School of Art. In 2020 Harrison was awarded the Howarth Trust Painting Scholarship. Solo exhibitions of his work have been held in New York, London, and Amsterdam, as well as a number of group exhibitions in Europe and the United States. He lives and works in Manchester, UK.
