Biography
Beginning to work with geometric abstraction in 1994, Karim Noureldin has expanded his practice from paper and canvas to walls, stairwells, sculpture, and site-specific installation. Working from intuition, Noureldin’s creations are made freehand, tying his practice across mediums to his preferred method of expression: drawing. Utilising abstraction as a universal language that connects people and places, Noureldin allows his pieces to be dyed by regional ‘accents’ as he moves and works with different cities around the world.
Karim Noureldin, born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1967, completed his studies at Zurich University of the Arts (1989) and Academy of Art and Design Basel (1993), Noureldin has completed residencies in India (Pro Helvetia – Swiss Arts Council, 2021), Egypt (Pro Helvetia – Swiss Arts Council, 2007), London (Foundation Landis and Gyr, 2006), and Italy (ISR Istituto Svizzero di Roma, 2000), among others. His abstract pieces have received awards such as the Fondation Irène Reymond’s Art Award in 2014, the Manor Art Prize from the Manor Foundation in 2004, and the Swiss Office for Culture’s Swiss Art Award in 1997. Noureldin has a decorated career, showing in museums and institutions across the world in cities such as Jaipur, Basel, Milan, Berlin, Frankfurt, Zurich, Bonn, Geneva, New York, London, and Paris. His public art installations and architectural collaborations can be found in Geneva, London, Lucerne, Bonn, and Basel, among others.
