Biography
Jeanine Brito’s work explores themes of memory and desire, often taking as their starting point a personal childhood memory that the artist looks to resolve or cement in her mind through materializing it in paint. This approach lends Brito’s work a dream-like, theatrical quality which is emphasised through her use of colour and the crop of her compositions – influenced by her time working as a graphic designer. Food is a frequent subject matter of the artist’s work, used as a mechanism to explore desire and the feeling of a memory, rendered in bright hues and with exquisite smooth surfaces. Brito returned to painting in 2020 and has increasingly incorporated self-portraiture into her work, picturing herself in imagined settings that lend her works a surreal quality.
Born in Germany in 1993, Brito emigrated to Canada as a child, where she graduated with a BDes from Ryerson University. Her work has been featured in numerous publications including Creative Boom and Creative Review. Britto has had her work exhibited in Berlin, London and Madrid. She lives and works in Toronto, Canada.
