Biography
Clem Crosby’s abstract compositions are not preconceived but instead brought into focus through his intuitive process of applying and removing paint. He applies gestural marks with a rhythmic precision, continually responding to what is already on the canvas. The result is paintings that are both analytically intense yet retain an intimate informality – and which exist as documents of their own construction.
Clem Crosby was born in 1958 in Hampshire, UK, later studying at Trent Polytechnic in Nottingham. Crosby has exhibited his work internationally, including at the Courtauld Gallery, London; the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto; and Modern Art, Oxford. His work is in the permanent collections of Tate, London; City Museum, Leeds; Microsoft Collection, USA; and UC Berkeley Museum, California. In 2007, Crosby was commissioned to make a large-scale public installation for the Young Vic Theatre in London.
Crosby lives and works in London.
