Katelyn Eichwald’s work is heavy with unexplored narrative. Taking screenshots from television, film and other media as her departure points, Eichwald removes her source material from its linear, sequential context by cropping, reducing and isolating elements. Through her radically reduced compositions focus on intimate and evocative details, Eichwald communicates a narrative tension. There is a sense of imminent activity that is always withheld – an arrested suspense without the possibility of release.
Katelyn Eichwald was born in Chicago in 1987. She received a BFA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2009 and received an MFA from the California College of the Arts in San Francisco in 2012. Her work has been exhibited internationally and she has had solo exhibitions in New York and Paris and Arles, France. With Fortnite Institute, she has published four books of her work that include paintings, poetry and photography. She lives and works in Chicago.
