Biography

Paul Rouphail’s work is based in the tradition of still-life painting. Depicting psychologically charged spaces, Rouphail’s work engages with architectural history and American painting traditions. Drawn from life, from memory, and the history of painting, the objects in Rouphail’s compositions are often deliberately at odds with their familiar domestic settings.

Rouphail was born in 1987. In 2010 he graduated with a BFA magna cum laude from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, and went on to receive an MFA in 2016 from the Rhode Island School of Design. Rouphail’s work has been reviewed online and in print in the Contemporary Art Review Los Angeles, New American Paintings and Gestalten Press’ Imagine Architecture, among others. He has exhibited throughout the United States as well as in Paris and Brussels. He lives and works in Philadelphia.
