Thomas Bils

Thomas Bils’ artistic practice investigates his own personal experiences of navigating life in contemporary suburban America. He paints scenes with bizarre and humorous subject matter, irreverently reflecting on the absurdity of the contemporary lived experience. Although Bils depicts autobiographical subject matter, he thinks of his works as compositions that draw from many narrational elements, including imagery sourced from meme culture, inviting multiple readings. He is engaged in an ongoing investigation into the mutability of truth and narrative. Through questioning the reliability of memory, he himself becomes the unreliable narrator of his own experience. 

Bils was born in 1993 in Melbourne, Florida. He graduated with a BFA from the New World School of The Arts, Miami, in 2017. He has undertaken artists’ residencies across the United States, his work has been included in several group exhibitions as well as solo presentations, including at the NSU Art Museum, Fort Lauderdale. He lives and works in Miami.
