Manheim now only exists in its former residents’ memories; ‘new Manheim’ has now been built as part of a relocation programme to allow for the expansion of the massive lignite mine nearby. This is a little-known but common problem with open-cast coal mining across Europe. As mines creep across the landscape, authorities forcibly evict people from their homes and communities to clear the way.
