More Info
Kardia, like most open-cast lignite mines, sits below the water table. As such, water has to be continually pumped out of it to allow access to the lignite deposits. Coal poses a multitude of water issues – from polluting and displacing the water table in the surrounding areas to causing supply shortages and ground instability.
