Explore Basil Beattie RA’s process, as the artist discusses surface, materiality and symbolism in the works included in his solo exhibition at Huxley-Parlour in January 2020. Known for his monumental compositions, Beattie likens the act of making to a journey of thinking and responding: both fundamental aspects of the human condition. Specifically, the artist explores the development of his acclaimed motifs, whereby the physicality of largely liminal spaces such as bridges, doorways and tunnels is met with a symbolic response through the process of their materialisation in paint.
