Biography
Aneta Regel’s sculptural practice is rooted in an elemental dialogue with nature; she draws on memory, material transformation, and the primal forces that shape both the earth and human consciousness. Working with stoneware and porcelain clays combined with crushed volcanic rock, basalt, and granite, Regel pushes her materials to physical extremes through repeated processes of drying and firing. Influenced by the rugged rural landscape of her upbringing and steeped in local legends and belief systems, her sculptures reflect natural forms such as limestone casts, volcanic material, and tree branches. Their surfaces oscillate between roughness and refinement, layered with dense, earth-toned colours. Suspended somewhere between emergence and entropy, her forms carry a sense of immensity, confronting the viewer with visceral impressions of the unresolved origins of both human and terrestrial life.
Regel was born in Poland in 1976 and studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk before moving to the United Kingdom in the early 2000s. She completed her studies at the University of Westminster and graduated from the Royal College of Art in London in 2006 with a degree in Glass and Ceramics. In 2020, she received the Excellence Award at the World Ceramics Biennale, Icheon, and in 2018 was shortlisted for the Loewe Craft Prize. Regel has also exhibited widely, including at Tate, London (2021), and the Saatchi Gallery, London (2009). Her work is held in major international collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pennsylvania; the World Ceramics Museum, Icheon; the Westerwald Museum, Höhr-Grenzhausen; and Handelsbankens Konstförening, Stockholm. Regel currently lives and works in London.
