Biography

Gustav Hamilton combines ceramics with painting and wood carving to create environments that function as unique forms of autofictional self-portraiture. Drawing on Midwestern landscapes, family heirlooms, and childhood objects, he constructs scenes that merge lived memory with imagined narrative, where shifts in scale and perspective produce encounters that are physically impossible yet emotionally resonant. Balancing illusionistic depth with the tactile presence of glazed ceramic, Hamilton’s compositions quietly navigate his own personal history, guiding the viewer through a layered exploration of identity and memory.

Hamilton was born in Washington in 1990. He received an MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, and a BFA from the University of Montana. Hamilton has exhibited widely in the United States, with solo exhibitions including Sucker for the Souvenir at David B. Smith Gallery, Denver (2021), and Six Tables in a Park at Zoe Fisher Projects, New York (2020). Selected group exhibitions include The Views at Moskowitz Bayse, Los Angeles (2022); Potluck at Hashimoto Contemporary, Los Angeles (2022); Expanded Field at Ochi Projects, Los Angeles (2021); and The Essential Goods Show at Fisher Parrish Gallery, New York (2020). His work is held in the collections of the Pérez Art Museum Miami, and the Alfred Ceramic Art Museum, New York. Hamilton currently lives and works in New York.
