Biography

Gabriel Pionkowski’s painting process consists of deconstructing his canvas and painting the individual strands of fabric before reconstructing the canvas. In doing so, he creates geometric, abstract works. Pionkowski pays special attention to subtle changes in colour formed into patterns through tonal tesserae. His paintings often have the material quality of tapestries, with the rewoven canvases bearing the marks of the artist’s laborious material process.

Pionkowski was born in the United States, 1986. He studied at the Florence University of Arts in 2007 before obtaining a BA in Art Education from Bethany College, Lindsborg, in 2009. Pionkowski went on to study for an MA and MFA at University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison. The artist has been exhibited across the United States and London, including the Wisconsin Triennial at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, and his works have been collected by the Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis. Pionkowski has been the recipient of several awards, such as the The Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant in 2016 and The Millay Colony for the Arts, Austerlitz in 2013.
