Biography
Jessica Stoller’s figurative sculptures explore porcelain as both material and subject, examining its historical associations with power, taste, desire, and consumption. Inspired by ornamental traditions, vanitas imagery, and classical myth, Stoller constructs a feminist visual language that combines cultural and corporeal narratives of the female body. Her works navigate extremes, juxtaposing idealised notions of femininity with grotesque or exaggerated forms, often revealing what is conventionally taught to be concealed. Through these elaborate surfaces, Stoller blurs boundaries between the seductive and the repulsive, inviting viewers to reconsider the cultural histories embedded within porcelain and to challenge the patriarchal power structures they uphold.
Stoller was born in Michigan in 1981. She received a BFA from the College for Creative Studies in 2004 and her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2006. She has been the recipient of multiple awards, including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2016); the Peter S. Reed Foundation Grant (2013); and a nomination for the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Biennial Award (2013). Her residencies include the Artist in the Marketplace Programme at The Bronx Museum of the Arts, New York (2011); the Kohler Arts/Industry Programme, Wisconsin (2011); and the Museum of Arts and Design’s Open Studio Programme, New York (2010, 2012). Stoller’s work has been exhibited internationally, with solo exhibitions including Split (2025) and Spread (2020) at P·P·O·W, New York; Lend Me Your Eyes at Hionas Gallery, New York (2012); and New Work: Jessica Stoller at The Clay Studio, Philadelphia (2011). Selected group exhibitions include Infinite Woman at Fondation Carmignac, Hyères (2024), and Finger Bang at Perrotin, Paris (2022). Stoller currently lives and works in New Jersey.
