Biography

Joe Bradley’s paintings explore the shifting boundaries between abstraction and figuration through a practice defined by continual reinvention. Emerging in New York in the early 2000s, he developed a mutable visual language shaped by references to art history, popular culture and personal experience. Bradley’s work combines the formal weight of Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism with an instinctive and often irreverent approach to image-making, allowing humour and vulnerability to exist alongside painterly ambition. Across successive bodies of work, he has moved between refinement and rawness, from early modular compositions and rudimentary pictographic forms to gestural canvases layered with marks, stains and fragments of studio material. Painted, cut and reassembled, these surfaces retain a physical record of their own making, balancing structure with improvisation. His paintings often preserve the tension between accident and intention, allowing incomplete gestures, erasures and physical traces of the studio process to remain visible within the finished work.

Joe Bradley was born in Maine in 1975 and earned a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1999. Major solo exhibitions include presentations at BOZAR / Centre for Fine Arts, Brussels (2016); the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo (2017); the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Waltham (2017); and Kunsthalle Krems, Krems (2025). His work has also been included in significant group exhibitions including Carnegie International at the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh (2005); the Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2008); EXPO 1: New York at MoMA PS1, New York (2013); and The Forever Now: Contemporary Painting in an Atemporal World at The Museum of Modern Art, New York (2014). His work is held in major public collections including The Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Buffalo AKG Art Museum, Buffalo; Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris; and the Hall Art Foundation, Vermont. Bradley currently lives and works in New York.
