Biography

Through a combination of ceramics and installation, Katie Spragg’s artistic practice explores the shifting relationships between humans and the natural world. Employing clay as both material and metaphor, she reflects on how nature can be curated and controlled, while accentuating the quiet resilience of plant life through its adaptation beyond human-imposed structures. Her work draws attention to overlooked and everyday ecologies, particularly those within urban spaces, challenging hierarchies that privilege the idealised over the familiar. Through delicate, evocative forms and participatory projects, Spragg considers the relationship between botanical activity and the passage of time, using storytelling as a means to reflect on coexistence. Within her work, plants and ceramics become conduits for shared narratives, connecting people to the subtle persistence of the natural world.

Spragg was born in the United Kingdom in 1987. Her work has been featured in exhibitions internationally, including presentations by the Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Espoo (2021); The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh (2019); and the Crafts Council in London and Miami (2017). Solo exhibitions include Katie Spragg Ceramics at Blackwell, The Arts and Crafts House, Bowness-on-Windermere (2018), and Glasshouses at the Garden Museum, London (2018). She has also undertaken commissions for Sotheby’s (2018), and the British Ceramics Biennale (2017). Her work is held in multiple collections, including a permanent installation at the Garden Museum, London (2019), and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (2017). In addition to her artistic practice, Spragg is a tutor at the Royal College of Art and a founding member of Collective Matter, a group dedicated to pioneering collaborative practices through clay. She has also developed the Clay for Dementia programme with the Garden Museum. Spragg lives and works in Brighton, England.
