Ted Pim

Ted Pim’s artistic practice draws upon a wide range of art historical and contemporary visual sources, creating richly layered compositions in which different times, places and traditions converge. Working from an extensive archive of collected imagery, his works combine references from Dutch seventeenth-century painting and the Italian Renaissance, to fashion photography and contemporary culture. Floral arrangements, figures and fragments of historical imagery recur throughout his paintings, appearing both familiar and estranged as they are reimagined through the artist’s distinctive visual language. Characterised by dramatic contrasts of light and shadow, Pim’s paintings are imbued with a theatrical atmosphere, from which luminous forms emerge against dark, immersive backgrounds. By collapsing the distinctions between historical and contemporary visual culture, Pim constructs pictorial worlds in which disparate references coexist, allowing established artistic traditions to be reconsidered through a contemporary lens.

Pim was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1987. He studied at the University of Ulster, Belfast, from 2005 to 2010 and at Virginia Wesleyan College, Virginia Beach, from 2008 to 2009. He has exhibited internationally with solo exhibitions including Empire Lines at The Salon, Los Angeles (2019); When Time Stood Still at Half Gallery, New York (2020); Moondance at Half Gallery, Los Angeles (2022); Full Moon at Almine Rech, Brussels (2023); Never Odd or Even at Almine Rech, London (2024); and Loinnir at Almine Rech, Shanghai (2025). Selected group exhibitions include New Classics at Galerie COA, Montreal (2019); In Full Bloom at Cuturi Gallery, Singapore (2020); Open Air with Tong Art Advisory, East Hampton (2020); Apostolic Succession at Spurs Gallery, Beijing (2021); Resting Point of Accommodation at Almine Rech, Brussels (2021); Blossom at Artron Art Centre, Shenzhen (2021); and I See the Blood Upon the Rose at MAC, Belfast (2025). Pim currently lives and works in Belfast.
