Biography
Informed by poetry, music and film, Tom Hammick’s painting practice explores themes of loss, the domestic, and devotion. Often presenting figures amongst a landscape, surrounded by trees and flowers, Hammick uses a rich colour palette and a simplicity of form to examine the human condition in relation to the environment.
Hammick (b. 1963) studied Fine Art and Printmaking at Camberwell College of Art, London. His work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United Kingdom as well as in France, the United States, Canada, China and Germany. Hammick has completed residencies at the English National Opera, as well as the International Scuola di Grafica in Venice, and he has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Jerwood Drawing Prize and The Nexus Prize, among others. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; the British Museum, London; the Yale Centre for British Art, Connecticut; the Towner Gallery, Eastbourne; the Biblioteque National, Paris; the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Canada and Pallant House, West Sussex.
