The Bobov Dol coal mines and plant have a track record of environmental chaos - burning waste along with coal, over-polluting and releasing toxins into rivers. Nearby houses and playgrounds nearby are often coated in a layer of toxic coal dust.

Like many coal facilities across Bulgaria, the facility is facing litigation for its transgressions.

Bulgaria has reluctantly indicated an end date for coal - but it may not come till 2040.
