Huxley-Parlour is pleased to announce Dandelion, the first solo exhibition in the UK of Italian-Bosnian artist Adelisa Selimbašić. Presenting a suite of seven new works on canvas, Dandelion expands the artist’s exploration of the feminine, colour and form.

Adelisa Salembašić. Pillow [2026]
Working across a variety of scales, Selimbašić’s paintings depict closely-cropped details of figures; busts, torsos and and limbs are rendered monumentally, captured in fleeting moments, they centre the perspective of the subject, how a woman may catch herself in the mirror, and interact with their body as they dress in the morning. Through a heightened use of light and shadow, and the delicate build up of thin layers of paint which lend the work a sensuality, Selimbašić’s bodies undergo an abstraction. Pools of colour collect across the artist’s surfaces, lending form to the artist’s figures through subtle shifts in tonal registers.
Selimbašić choice of perspective affords her subjects an openness, they present themselves unselfconsciously in intimate moments. Yet they also feel remote, suspended against ambiguous grounds they evoke a liminality where easy interpretation of narrative and event is obfuscated. The artist’s practice takes ‘innocent femininity’ as a framework through which to dismantle traditional viewpoints of the female body. Disoriented in place and time, the viewer is denied voyeuristic fulfilment, instead Selimbašić returns agency to her subjects. Seeking to reverse entrenched societal expectations of female sexuality, Selimbašić presents it as driven by desire for intimacy and connection.

Biography
Drawing on the visual familiarity of photography and social media, Adelisa Selimbašić’s paintings explore bodily representation, intimacy and femininity, using closely observed scenes of everyday life to challenge conventional perceptions of the body. Her compositions depict figures at rest, in conversation or physical contact, often cropping and obscuring her subjects so that individual identities give way to a broader sense of shared experience. Faces remain indistinct, while bodies overlap, press against one another or extend beyond the edges of the canvas, transforming her subjects into generational archetypes rather than individual portraits. Through heightened colour and recurring moments of physical touch, Selimbašić considers themes of attraction, sisterhood and human connection, using the body as both subject and formal structure to propose a fluid and unconventional vision of femininity.
Adelisa Selimbašić was born in 1996 in Germany, and earned her Master’s in Painting from the Venice Academy of Fine Arts in 2021. In 2023, she was awarded the Untitled Art Fountainhead Residency Artist Prize, and in 2024 was a finalist for the Premio Cairo.
